Code of Conduct for school students on CityRail trains and stations

In order to retain your school RailPass all students are to behave in a manner that ensures your comfort and safety as well as the safety and comfort of other passengers.
As a student make sure you:

  • Obey all signage instructions on stations and trains.
  • Respect the needs and comfort of other passengers.
  • Behave safely at all times (e.g. avoid running or riding bikes, skateboards, scooters or skates on stations and trains, keep off the train lines, keep arms, legs and other body parts inside the train, refrain from touching train doors, safety equipment or any part of a moving train).
  • Use non-offensive language and behave appropriately at all times on rail property (e.g. avoid swearing, spitting, fighting, throwing items, keep feet off seats).
  • Respect rail property and report graffiti and vandalism.
  • Keep yourself and anything you are carrying clear of aisles, steps, thoroughfares and behind the yellow line on platforms.
  • Take your rubbish with you and dispose of it thoughtfully.
  • Follow the instructions of station staff, drivers, guards and transit officers.
  • Spread out along the platform so as not to overcrowd one carriage. Avoid boarding carriages which are already overcrowded.
  • Allow other passengers to alight before boarding and board the train without delay.
  • Move inside the carriage and stand away from the doors during travel.
  • Do not carry knives, spray cans and permanent marker pens.
  • Adhere to the law that bans drinking alcohol and smoking on trains.

Important information about your RailPass

Your school student RailPass comes with a few conditions. By accepting it, you are agreeing to abide by the Code of Conduct for students travelling by train.

Basically, you just need to consider other passengers so please read the following information and keep yourself and other people safe.

Your student RailPass is available at the beginning of each school year and valid until the end of that year. You can apply for a new or replacement pass through your college, school or local station. TAFE Student passes are issued for half year or full year, depending on enrolment.

Using your RailPass

  • First up, remember to carry your pass. CityRail station staff, transit officers and NSW Police Officers can ask to see your pass at any time and if you don’t have a pass or a ticket you may be fined up to $550. Ouch!
  • Take notice of the stations shown on your pass because you can only use it to enter or exit at those stations.
  • Don’t lend your pass to anyone – you’re the only person allowed to use it.
  • If all the seats are full and an adult is standing, offer them your seat – don’t wait to be asked.
  • If you have a school function on a weekend, you’ll need to buy a ticket. You can only use your pass for travel on journeys commencing before 7pm on school days, Monday to Friday.
  • If a station has automatic gates, you must use them to enter and leave the station.
Keep your pass in top condition.
  • Take care of your pass because if it’s damaged, it may not work at the automatic gates.
  • If you have damaged or misused your pass, or if it’s lost or stolen, you’ll have to pay a replacement fee and buy a ticket until you receive a new pass.
  • If the automatic gates damage your pass, or your pass stops working, ask CityRail station staff for assistance.

Stay safe by…

  • Standing behind the yellow line on the platform.
  • Waiting for passengers to leave the train before you get on.
  • Ensuring you get on and off the train in a way that’s safe for you and other passengers.
  • Making sure you move inside the carriage in order to keep doorways clear.
  • Never boarding a train or holding the door open after the whistle has blown.
  • Never riding bicycles, skateboards or scooters on station platforms.
  • Never playing with sporting equipment on the platform.

Be sure to…

  • Be polite – wait for all passengers to leave the train before you get on.
  • Take care with your school bag – make sure it’s not in the way of other passengers, keep it off the seat and remember backpacks can bump into people behind you.
  • Assist others – keep an eye out for elderly people and those with disabilities such as blindness. These people often travel by train and they could do with your help. Also mothers with babies in strollers or prams may appreciate a helping hand.
  • Understand your behaviour counts – when you apply for your pass, you’re giving permission for CityRail to show security camera footage to your school principal or teachers should you be caught misbehaving and breaching the Code of Conduct for students.

If you see something, say something

While travelling by train, if you see anything you think should be reported to CityRail, please tell the station staff, your parents or teachers. You can also call CityRail on 131 500. If there is anything more you want to know, you can ask either your school or college administration office.
