When Travelling At Night
Travel Safe
Numerous security measures have been put in place to maximise the safety and comfort of passengers including Transit Officers, Police, Emergency Help Points, high intensity lighting and security cameras.
Travelling by rail is very safe and very few people become victims of crime. However, there are simple precautions you can take to help protect yourself. Please note, this isn’t a checklist, just consider what is appropriate for you.
- When waiting for your train, stand in a brightly lit area.
- CityRail has video surveillance cameras monitoring stations 24 hours a day.
- There are press button Emergency Help Points on every platform to connect you to our security control room. They’re bright orange in colour and are indicated by Help Point signs.
- On the train if there are other passengers, sit near them and not by yourself.
- Try not to become isolated. If a carriage empties or you feel uneasy or uncomfortable, move to another occupied carriage where possible or sit close to the guard’s compartment indicated by an external blue light.
- Protect yourself by acting confidently and being alert and observant.
Be aware of what is going on around you – personal stereos, tiredness and excessive drugs or alcohol will reduce this ability.
In case of an emergency, there are emergency help points in our newer trains, which enable you to talk to the train guard. Otherwise phone 000 and the Police will alert the Rail Security Control Centre.
Immediately report any harassing or threatening passengers to a guard, Transit Officer, Police Officer or other staff member. CityRail needs you to assist in keeping our network safe.
